You may be drowning in frustration or misery. You might be drowning in sickness, pain, or suffering. Perhaps you’re sinking in depression or fear. Or maybe you’re drowning in a sea of sin and you feel like you’re going down for the last time.
Well, I have good news for you! There is an answer. There is a way out. His name is Jesus Christ. No, I’m not talking about dead religion. I’m talking about a living relationship. I’m talking about the power of God to change your life.
God is Not Your Problem
You need to know this: God really loves you and He cares about you. He wants to help you.
But I’ve noticed that people are quick to blame God for all the bad things that happen to them. Even insurance companies call earthquakes, floods, and cyclones, “acts of God.” Or, if someone dies people say, “God took him.” That makes it sound like God is a murderer. God is NOT a murderer. He’s not the one who is making you sick, or frustrated, or depressed. He’s not your problem!
Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and to destroy. But I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
Friend, God is not a thief. He’s not a destroyer. It’s the devil who is trying to kill you and make your life miserable. But Jesus came to this earth to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). Jesus is here, not to make you a prisoner, but to set you free!
Root or Fruit?
Suppose a man was suffering with cancer. A good physician would do more than just prescribe pain-killer. He would remove the source of the suffering. He would take out the cancer.
In the same way, Jesus doesn’t want to provide only a little temporary relief from our pain. He wants to get to the root cause of the real problem.
A lot of people today just want a quick fix, but not a lasting cure. They want to feel good for a brief moment, but they don’t seem to care whether their lives are changed.
The real problem is not in our circumstances, or in society, or in other people. It’s in us. It’s in our hearts. Hatred, fear, confusion, addiction, and greed; and even poverty, sickness, and calamity are only the symptoms.
The real problem with man is spiritual death. When the first man, Adam, sinned his spirit became dead to God and dead to God’s ways. The nature of Adam’s heart changed and became selfish, fearful, and devilish.
Then Satan began to rule over Adam after he sinned, causing havoc in this world. Not only did Adam sin, but the Bible says that all men have sinned and have inherited spiritual death (Romans 5:12).
If our lives are ever going to be changed, our hearts must be changed. And the only one who can do that is God.
The Great Exchange!
How do you feel when you see people do what is wrong? If you see men rob, steal, murder, rape, and lie, what do you feel? When you think about all the injustice, evil, and wickedness in this world do you get angry?
How do you think a pure and holy God feels? He hates sin. He sees what it does to people and how it ruins their lives. And yet, God loves those people and He wants to save them from their horrible sins.
But God cannot ignore our sins and just pretend they don’t exist. That would not be right, that would be unjust. So what should He do? Yes, there’s nothing too difficult for God, but God cannot do what is wrong. He cannot compromise with sin.
So God had the perfect answer: He sent someone else to suffer for our sins. Someone who had never sinned and had no spiritual death would die as our substitute. The innocent would die in the place of the guilty. He sent His Son: Jesus Christ.
Jesus shed His blood on the cross so God could legally forgive you of your sins. And God raised Jesus from the dead, so that you could have spiritual life—eternal life.
What Do You Say?
Today, Jesus would like to remove the “cancer” of spiritual death from your heart and give you a “transplant” of His own life and nature. If you will accept God’s offer, He will cleanse you of your sins, make you new on the inside, and Jesus will come to live in your heart by His Spirit.
All you have to do is receive Jesus as your personal Savior and Lord (Romans 10:9). You don’t have to try to clean up your life, because you can’t do that any ways. You can’t buy your way into heaven with good works. God’s will save you because He loves you and wants to do it, not because you deserve it. And God has the right to save you because He paid the price for your sin and spiritual death with His own Son. Now the choice is yours.
Listen friend, all of us have sinned. So all of us need a Savior—that includes YOU. You can accept Jesus, or you can reject Him. There is no middle ground. You are ready right now, there’s nothing you can do to get ready.
Pray this simple prayer and mean it in your heart. God will hear you. If you reach up in faith, God will reach in with the answer. Pray this prayer out loud, right now:
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner. I cannot change myself. I need you, God.
You sent Your Son, Jesus, to suffer and die in my place on the cross. You laid on Him my sin, my pain, my guilt, and my shame. His blood was poured out to wash away my sins. He went to hell so that I wouldn’t have to go there.
But you raised Him from the dead so that I might have spiritual life, eternal life, the nature of God in me!
Right now, I receive Jesus as my Savior and I accept Him as my Lord. Jesus, come into my heart. Cleanse me and save me.
Thank you Father God for hearing my prayer. Thank you for saving me and giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!
